Art/Blog Break

I took a bit of a art/blog break... but I am feeling the creative juices starting to flow again.  I was feeling a bit worn out and needed a bit of a break from painting, though not from creativity.  I have been quilting, gardening (indoors and out) and working on the house (ripping out old icky carpets).

New paintings should be starting very soon so stay tuned!

Creative Project, Just not Art

I have been busy working on a new quilt for my bed... a lovely patchwork quilt.  I need to point out that I have never done a patchwork quilt (I did a pillow some time ago with my Grannie), so perhaps making a king size quilt was a little large of an undertaking.  Though, I am happy to say that I am almost done.  I just have the quilting part (attaching all the layers together) and then the binding.  Then... it will be back to my normal type of creativity... Painting!

Woo Hoo! June Has Arrived!

June has finally arrived and brought with it... more temperature swings and weird weather (yesterday it was 30C and today... 19C), but I am happy to say that my garden is in, the flower beds are ready for the heat (all planted up) and thus I can do more painting. Sadly in this rush to get all the gardening stuff out I just haven't had much time left in the day to paint. I am hoping to change that in the month of June and I hope to have many paintings done this month as I have all sorts of partially finished paintings hanging on the walls!

On My Easel....

I am one of those people who just can't have one thing on the go at a time... Today on my easel there are four paintings.... the apple (still very wet), a tugboat (on the bottom front. It is an experimental piece painting on a support covered with fine pumice), a new watercolour bird (for when both oil paintings are too wet to continue), and a abstracty boat painting in the back in case I feel like something completely different! And... as I finish one, I almost always add another one to my stack.

ps - I think I need a bigger easel!

Back to "Apple Splash"

After a long hiatus from this painting, I've decided to (finally) finish it. I've been working on the water splash... adding details and emphasizing the darks and highlights. Next will be the area around the stem... and finally the lower right hand corner. After that, order a frame and hang it on the wall!

(Semi) Regularily Scheduled Postings

I'm happy to report that I am (finally) in my new place and the studio is (finally) almost completely unpacked and ready for some painting action. And... as you can tell from the photograph, Squiggy is probably wondering what took me so long.... that, or he just woke up from his beauty sleep.

Transitions - Bird #31

My first painting in nearly a month and boy does it feel good to pick up the paint brushes again. I haven't quite moved into my new place (nine days and counting), but I do have a travel set of watercolours and some pre-cut paper until my stuff is all moved in. Soon... soon....

Arrived Safe and Sound

Just wanted to pop in and let everyone know that myself (and the cats) have arrived safe and sound in Newmarket and have already begun looking for a new place to call home. Until that happens... we are all adapting to live (somewhat) comfortably in a tiney little hotel room. Hopefully the home hunting goes smoothly and before the end of the month I'll have a place to call my own again.

Kittens!

No new painting tonight (camera battery is dead and I still haven't found all the cables for the scanner), so I thought I would post a picture of my two new kittens. They have been with me for about two weeks now and I think I am starting to settle back into my painting routine. Though, just as I am pulling out the paints, there seems to be a tail in my face. sigh. Oh well. The joys of having kittens in the house.

The tea painting is almost complete and I hope to finish it by the end of the weekend..... and I have been working on a new floral painting during my lunch hours that I should have done pretty soon to. So, stay tuned for painting updates!

Studio Update: All Moved In (Mostly)

I am (mostly) moved into my new studio... its been a long week of packing/unpacking, cleaning, finding out my cell barely works (out of reception) and taking time to sit outdoors and enjoying the peace and quiet of the area (which is what attracted me to the area in the first place). Below is the view from my place, a wonderful change from the hustle and bustle of city life. I'm close to the city and shopping, but far enough off the beaten path to be away from it all.

I've located most of my paints/canvas'/and brushes and new art should start appearing very soon. I have my easel set up next the window so I can enjoy the view and be inspired by the wildlife. I have chatted with some of my new neighbors and have been told that there are many eagles and sea otters that come up the river to feed on the salmon. Hopefully I can snap some photos of these visitors and I'll post pictures when I do.

Why, Hello There

Yesterday was not a very productive day, though I did manage to finish this little one. I still much work to finish up on my parents house and with their visit arrival coming very soon I really need to finish up that painting. So, most of this weekend painting will be that painting and, while its paint is drying, I'll be working on my two other smaller oils (the candied apple and the grapes)

In other good news, I received a letter from the South Delta Artists Guild that one of my paintings has been accepted to the 3rd Annual Oil & Water show this summer. The show is from July 24 - August 31 2008 at the Kiwanis Longhouse Centre for the Arts in Tsawwassen, BC.

artSpacific: Opening Reception

Today was the opening reception for artSpacific and was pleasantly surprised that my painting Frozen in Time was awarded the SDAG "Work of Distinction". This is my first award at a show and hopefully there will be many more in the future!

The one thing that I did learn/see at the show... is that I need to start bringing up the sizes of my paintings and increasing my body of work so I can enter more shows and galleries. I may be a little slower at producing these larger works (only get an hour or so an evening to paint) but it is now a goal of mine.

There is another show deadline in June that I am going to strive for four new paintings to enter. So... stay tuned!

Opening Reception

Opening night at Place des Arts was an absolute blast! It was really neat to see my art hanging in wall and watching people going from wall to wall looking at all the wonderful pictures. I am really motivated now to continue working on some larger works so I could (perhaps next year?) have a solo show.

Its amazing sometimes to realize how small the world really is. While at opening night last night I bumped into another artist that I have been conversing with on Wetcanvas. Amie is also showing several of her reduction cut prints at the same show. It was really neat to meet someone in person that I met online.

I wasn't fully prepared for the opening night (blame it on my lack of experience... this being my first show). Next time, I need to make sure that I bring business cards and I need to work on marketing myself much more during the show (thanks for the tips Amie!).

Framed!

Here's the result of many days worth of framing... and now I am ready to drop off the art for the show. I am really happy that these are done and now I can go back to more painting.

Curiosity

Big news for me this weekend, I was accepted to show in the 'Positively Petite' Place des Arts annual miniature show from November 8 to December 21, 2007. The opening reception is on November 8 from 7:30 to 9:30pm and if you are in the Coquitlam, British Columbia area you are invited to attend.

Sunset Dreaming

I felt like taking a break from the little animal paintings, so I'll be presenting a few landscapes and skyscenes over the next few days.

I've been busy trying to finish up a few larger acrylic paintings these past few days. I'm entering a couple (hopefully... one if I run out of time) paintings to a WWAO art show next month in Florida. I'm really excited as this is going to be my first art show and I want to make sure that everything is as perfect as I can paint it. I'll post the painting(s) that I'm submitting over the weekend.

Bid on Ebay

I had a busy weekend. My favourite art sale was having a huge sale and I stocked up on just about everything. Have new papers to try, paintbrushes to use, and even picked up a set of Gamblin oil paints. I've never used oil before, but love the look it has so next month I think I will start playing around with it. I can't wait!

I enjoyed my weekend off from painting. But the weekend is over now and the daily paintings will begin again. The one above was finished this morning and will be available on ebay a little later today.

Cheers!
