Sunset Clouds

Another 'loose' landscape painting... this time based on a gorgeous sunset I saw a couple weeks ago. This is a view facing northeast off my deck towards Port Coquitlam, British Columbia.

I'm doing some of these looser landscapes as practise for a larger oil painting I want to do (after I'm done the lighthouse painting mind you). I've never really painted clouds or sunsets before so this is all experimentation with colours and brush strokes.

My palette consisted of phthalo blue, cadmium yellow light, zinc-titanium white, cadmium orange, chromatic black, and a touch of alizarin red.

I should add... for some reason I just couldn't capture all the subutle colours in this painting. The sky should be much lighter than it appears... and the colours more blended.

Sunrise on the Fraser

We've been having some of the most spectacular sunrises recently and I just couldn't help but paint one. This picture is facing east off my balcony looking over the Fraser River.

I've never painted a sunrise before... and I think this one turned out not too bad. I have plenty of paint left to try painting more sunrises. As usual, this one is for sale and will be posted in ebay later this week.

Summer Berries, Work in Progress

I'm taking a short break from the lighthouse painting to let the paint dry a little. One of the dangers of oil paints I have found is that since it takes a while for the paint to dry... I am more likely to put my fingers into the wet paint and smudge it around. Nothing serious... just a little green in the lighthouse.... nothing a little paint won't fix.

So... I started painting another couple little masterpieces. This first one is of a chickadee checking out the season's raspberries. One of my favourite fruits of summer is the raspberry. I remember sneaking into my Baba's (my Grannie's) garden to steal raspberries when nobody was looking. Ahhh... the fun summer memories.

Tomorrow I'll share another little masterpiece in progress.

Morning Light , Work in Progress, Part 5

Here's the progress shot from yesterday's painting session. I took this photo using natural light so the colours are a little closer to the true colours.

I'm almost done all the rocks now... just have to wrap them around the edges of the painting and I might be just about done then. I have a few more details to add to the lighthouse as well.

Morning Light , Work in Progress, Part 4

Got a little bit more done tonight on this masterpiece in progress. I started painting the bushes and other vegetation in the foreground. It's slow going... but I am making progress.

I should have more painting time again tomorrow after work...so, there will be yet another update on this painting then.

Morning Light , Work in Progress, Part 3

I didn't realize that it has been nearly a week since I last posted an update here... wow... time does fly when one is busy! I didn't get a lot of painting done this past weekend, but I did manage to get started on the rocks in my lighthouse painting. The rocks/islands in the background are too dark I think... they don't appear to be as far back as they are suppose to be. I'm really happy with the way the forground is turning out. I just have a few more rocks and some trees and this one will be finished! Yah!

I have a good painting evening planned tomorrow so there shall be another update then.

Morning Sunshine

Just finished painting another little chickadee... I'm starting to get a number of these in my studio. I really love painting these guys... they have just an adorable 'cheeky-ness' to them.

I would like to thank blmiers2 (Barbara) over at flickr! for giving me permission to use her (and hers son's) photographs for inspiration. She has some absolutely wonderful bird photography in her group of photos!

Morning Light, Work in Progress, Part 2

I made some progress on my lighthouse painting this weekend - I finished painting the lighthouse itself. I still got the forground rocks and trees to finish. I am hoping to get some good painting time this week to finish that up.

I really like the way the painting is progressing. Its taking me a little longer than I hoped to finish it, but that's okay. I've noticed a few compositional things that if I were to redo this painting that I would do different. I think I positioned the lighthouse too far to the left. I think more of it should be showning. But... these are the things one learns as they paint. The next one will be that much better!

Evening Watch

Another new robin this week... fresh off the easle. I was going for a looser look in this painting and I think it worked out quite nice. I used a slightly larger brush and worked a little more quickly as well. These little paintings are awesome for trying out new techniques.

Summer Breeze

Just finished this little guy. He's just sitting there enjoying the summer breeze through his feathers. With the warmer weather here on the west coast lately I've been thinking alot of the coming summer months. The warm days with the cool ocean breeze in the evenings. I can't wait!

This guy will be up for auction soon, but if you are intersted in him before I post the auction, give me a shout!

This is the painting that has been taking up most of my free time (note... free time is time that I'm not at my day job) lately. Its based on a photograph that I took in Ucluelet, British Columbia last year on one of my many trips to the island. I'm actually really happy with the way its turning out. Its hard to see in the picture (taken at night... the final picture will be taken with daylight), but there is lots of colour and movement in the rough sea in the background. I got myself on a schedule with this one. I want to complete it before the weekend.

From the closeup (detail in the lower right hand corner of the picture), you can see that I am wrapping the painting around the edge of the canvas. I find it a bit more tricker to paint... but I think it looks really cool hanging on the wall.
