Morning Light

I have finally finished this oil painting. It actually turned out pretty good and I am fairly happy with myself. There were a lot of things I learned about oil paints (and some about composition), but over all... this one isn't all that bad.

Here's a couple of side views and a closeup of the lighthouse. This is painted on gallery wrap canvas and I continued the painting onto the sides. The painting of the sides is the main reason why this painting took so long to completed. Next time, I am thinking of just painting a solid colour around the edges.

Abstract Reflections

I have finally finished this 'work in progress' and I have to say that I am fairly happy with it. Its not varnished it and I will possibly do the odd little touch up on it yet, but it is otherwise completely done.

Brighter Days Ahead

I called this one 'Brighter Days Ahead'... its the way I feel as the season changes from winter to spring. Everything in the spring is renewed energy... a fresh start... and full of brighter days.

The Pose

Hot of the easle... introducting my little guy I've name 'The Pose'. This little chickadee seems to be posing for the camera... but then again, they almost always look like they are posing!

Fiery Tulip

The image capture of this painting just doesn't do it justice... there are soo many more colour in real life than what can be seen here. I have to admit that I just can't seem to photograph reds and yellows properly.

I took a quick break from the birds to paint this colourful tulip. I'm really happy with the way that it turned out! I even got to use some of my new Windsor and Newton paints... yah!

Amoung the Crocus

The crocus' are in full bloom here and I just couldn't resist trying to paint them... and of course... I had to pluck in a robin!

The grass in front of the robin was a struggle to get right... and I still don't think I got it completely right. I tried out my new fan brush with the grass and that definitely helped.

Flutterby

Flutterby is my newest little chickadee to join the family. I remember when I was a little kid calling butterflies 'flutterflies' and that word has since stuck to me.

This guy is painted using the same (except for the butterfly) palette as the previous chickadee. I love using those colours and I am able to create lots of greys and whites... perfect colours for a chickadee!

In other news... my new order of oil paints arrived today! Yah! So, now that my palette has significantly expanded there will be even more bright colours to enjoy in my paintings.

Buddy, Completed Painting

I just finished this little guy tonight so I suppose he is no longer a 'work in progress'. Yah! I used six colours in the body of the bird: zinc-titanium white, chromatic black, ultramarine blue, raw sienna, and burnt sienna. For the tree branch... I also used transparent earth red to get a more 'branchy' like colour.

Once again, I would like to thank blmiers2 (Barbara) over at flickr! for giving me permission to use her (and hers son's) photographs for inspiration.

I actually did finish another little painting tonight.... but, show and tell on that one is going to have to wait. It is a surprise for someone. I'll post it when it is recieved.

SnowDrop

Here's another watercolour for the week... I'm feeling a bit better, but not completely great yet.

I was trying the dark background look this time... and I think my background went a little too dark this time... there are suppose to be some blue highlights in the background.

Springtime Bluebird

Another watercolour painting from me tonight... my throat is feeling a little sore tonight and I didn't want to further irritate it with the oil paint fumes. Hopefully I feel better tomorrow and I'll have another update of 'Buddy'.

I was having a terrible time with the scanner and the oranges on the poppy and bluebird. If I got the oranges to look right... the greens looked terrible.... sigh. Here's the best I could do tonight. It is much more colourful in life with lots of subtle tones in the bird and background.

Introducing... "Buddy"

I added the sky yesterday... a couple glazes of pthalo blue, zinc-titanium white, and a hint of alizarin crimson. I haven't decided if I am going to add some clouds in the background yet or leave it as a plain sky.

I usually have several (more than I probably should) little masterpieces on the go at any one time. At the moment... I have five oils, five watercolors, and two acrylics.... I find that this works best for me. If I get frustrated with one painting, I can put it down and work on a different one. Perhaps one of these days I'll share a snapshot of my work area.

Chickadee, Work in Progress

Here's the beginning of my next little masterpiece. This little guy is drawn lightly (darkened here so you can see him) on gessoed canvas paper and should be recieving his coats of paint tomorrow.

The title of this one hasn't been really decided yet... thought I would open it up to suggestions. So... what should I name this little guy?

Cherry Blossoms

I didn't manage to get much painting tonight so I thought I would share a recent photograph that I took. Its cherry blossom time out here on the west coast and I wasn't disappointed with the blossoms!

Robin Redbreast

I felt like taking a short break from the oil paints today. I have a number of acrylic and watercolor paintings sketched and ready to paint....

Morning Light, Work in Progress, Part 6

It might look completely done... but, unfortunately... its not quite done. I still have to paint the bottom edge of the pictures... and then it will be done.

This painting has been one huge learning process... its my first landscape, my first larger oil painting, and my first marine view. Looking at it now, there are a few things I would change next time I do one of these. As much as I thought that painting around the edges of the painting would look cool, it has made it a longer process (probably due to the amount of detail I have put in it). Also... I need to better balance the composition... there is too much 'weight' on the left side with nothing to balance it out. Other things are just some minor nitpicks about colours and such. But... overall... I'm really happy with this one.

I hope to finish the last edge in a few days when the current wetspots dry. It'll be easier to grip the painting without rubbing all the paint off. I'll post some pictures of the edges and a better photo of the actual painting then.

Chickadee Breeze

Here's a little chickadee I finished tonight... and I do have to say that I am really happy with the way that this one turned out. I am trying to figure out how to do clouds... nice, fluffy, summer-time clouds. This little guy is sitting in a tree watching the summer clouds roll on by.

I painted this one with a fairly limited palette... prussian blue, titanium-zinc white, and a touch of alzarin crimson in the sky and clouds. The chickadee is painted using titanium-zinc white, chromatic black, and raw sienna.

Sunset over West Vancouver

My second sunset painting... this time it is of the view in my previous apartment overlooking West Vancouver.

The colours used on this painting include cadmium orange and yellow, prussian blue, phthalo blue, naphanol red, alizarian crimson, chromatic black, and zinc-titanium white.

I really like the almost abstract look of this painting and I'm really happy with the way the colours worked out. My goal was to blend without getting 'mud'... and I think I accomplished that.
